The Journey, the 2022 Qatar World Cup ball, is lighter than the ball used in previous World Cups, allowing it to maintain a faster speed through the air.
The surface of the Journey sphere is a textured polyurethane spherical material called SPEEDSHELL. The ball's sphere is made up of 20 SPEEDSHELL modules, with a triangular shape and a bending design that reduces the drag coefficient of the ball in the air. In addition, with the design details embedded in the surface, the Journey designers greatly improved the stability of the football flight. In terms of the fabrication process, the 20 SPEEDSHELL modules on the Journey surface are fitted together by thermal bonding splicing, rather than being sewn together. It is also the first World Cup ball to be used entirely with water-based paint and water-based glue.
Another highlight of Journey's design is the application of an innovative technology system -- CTR-CORE, a central chip embedded in the ball that can record data about football movement 500 times per second.
